At FH we offer a few different options for training style.  We serve workouts and personalized training programs.  What’s the difference between these styles?

  1. Group Fitness

  2. Personal Training

  3. Small Group/Specialty Group Training

Group fitness and personal/small group training have their unique benefits and pose different growth opportunities for your fitness. Depending on where you are in your fitness journey, how you source your motivation, and what your goals are, you may be more compatible with one over the other.

We will quickly describe the differences and benefits of group fitness, personal training and small group training so you are able to determine the style of training that works best for you.

If multiple styles speak to you and your goals, consider implementing a blend of the two and work towards being consistent with a versatile training regimen that will push you to become the healthiest and fittest version of you.  Our solution for this is joining an 8-week small group where you get the personal attention you need from your coach in your small group setting in addition to full access to group classes outside of your training hour.

From our experience working with clients, we’ve noticed people’s fitness routines typically fall into one of two buckets:

  • A social, high variety approach. This person thrives on the energy of a community and classes. They usually choose to include several different large group class formats in their plan and stick with set class times. As a result, a core social group is often formed to blend exercise with friendly accountability. This is group fitness

  • A goal-oriented, highly specific focus. Aiming to assign a purpose to every minute of exercise, this person has a plan for every workout. Their approach is more prescriptive and has a specific, desired outcome.  This is 1:1 or small group training.

So, which method is best? As with many answers in health and fitness, it depends on your individual goals and sought-after results.

GROUP FITNESS- most affordable to the masses/budget friendly

The benefits of exercising in a group are profound and can be transformational to your health and fitness. First and foremost, group fitness offers the motivation you need on the days when you can’t quite generate it yourself. Every single person in a large group exercise class format has a different goal in mind, so rather than catering to the individual, the classes have to be structured to provide motivation and healthy movement for all. So, if you are someone who struggles to put in 110% during your workouts, group fitness is a solid solution that will get you energized to break a sweat. FH strength and conditioning group class workouts are made up of varied functional movements performed at a high intensity.  Generally speaking, if you’re purposely moving, increasing your heart rate, and sweating, you’re doing a FH workout.  If you’re looking to move more, sweat, burn calories, and have fun, hopping into a group exercise class might be all you need.  Large class settings are energizing, motivating, and can offer a great workout. Ultimately, working out in a group fitness class is fun, engaging and a way to hold yourself accountable for getting in your daily workout.

But…

If you have specific goals in mind, such as losing weight or getting stronger, large group classes may have a place in your plan, but as an approach alone, likely won’t be enough to help you reach those goals.

If you’re in a spot where you’re driven by seeing results — maybe you have a set desired outcome, a specific goal you’re chasing, or a fitness or body composition deadline you’re trying to meet, you want to look and feel a certain way by a specific date, — a structured, professionally-designed exercise program is going to be the best use of your time and effort.

Individualized guidance allows you to objectively assess if your endurance and strength are improving, and if so, by how much. When exercising in a custom programmed approach with a coach who’s there to supervise your plan and help monitor outcomes, progress metrics are often more tangible. For example, a program can make it easier and safer to track improvements in your mile time, body composition, maximum weight used on a single repetition of a squat, or number of pushups completed in one minute.

PERSONAL TRAINING- premium service reflected in the price

Personal training creates a space for you to cultivate a unique relationship with one of our coaches. It is during one-on-one time that your coach can have all of their focus on you. They assess your body, cater to injuries, and provide training programs that are tailored specifically to your goals. While personal training can benefit anyone on a health and fitness journey, it can be very impactful for those who are beginners in the scene. If you are new to the health and fitness train, working with a certified trainer will provide you with the extra help you need when it comes to feeling comfortable and confident, mastering your form, and learning your body’s limitations and strengths.

SMALL GROUP TRAINING- the perfect combination and bang for your buck. A fraction of the cost of 1:1 training

With the benefits of both personal training and group fitness, small group training is a fantastic training style to implement into your workout routine. In a small group training session, you can expect to be working out alongside 3 to 7 other individuals. It provides a blend of the benefits of personal training and group training that will keep you motivated while ensuring you have the attention you need from a trainer. It is truly the best of both workout worlds!

Ultimately, if you have a specific goal you want to achieve, engaging in a structured 8-12 week training program is the best way to drive efficiency and results. A true program will be tailored to you and customized to your needs and ambitions. View our latest Small Group Camps here!

An approach taken by one FH member…

Switching things up a couple times a year and making group classes part of a larger strategic plan...

For one member in particular she said that she was participating in a total of 4-5 classes per week, and yet her body composition had been plateaued for two years.  She had convinced herself that she was where her body just liked to be. She eventually found this to be untrue after she decided to connect with a FH Coach and begin a structured small group, goal-driven program that included access to group classes on her non-training days as well as nutrition coaching.

She noticed a tangible increase in her performance and strength almost immediately.  Within a few months, her plateau broke and she started seeing the results she was hoping for all along. She continued to participate in our large group exercise classes, but this time, she worked with her Coach to plug in specific classes to better complement her broader, outcome-driven fitness goals.  Once her small group ended she went back to being a regular unlimited member with the goal of doing another small group in the Fall.
