Breast Cancer Action Monthโ Member Spotlight: ๐This is Susan๐โ โ On December 4th, 2019๐ I went in for my first mammogram at the age of 40. At the time, I thought I was simply checking off a box for an age-induced preventive screening. I was shocked when I was called back the next day for more imaging. Two weeks later, I was given the diagnosis of DCIS. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. Essentially cancer decided to try and start a party in the milk ducts of my breast. Fortunately, if youโre going to get breast cancer, this is the one to have. My cancer had spread just right into the quadrants of my (itty bitty) breast and a mastectomy was strongly encouraged. On April 1st (thatโs right April fools) I underwent a left breast mastectomy. I am extremely fortunate that chemotherapy and radiation were not necessary. I will have mammograms and MRIs every six months to monitor. โ โ I live a relatively healthy lifestyle. I don't have a significant family history of breast cancer. I did not have any lumps or masses that I or my doctors could feel. The genetic testing was negative for mutations. I simply was 1 in 8. โ โ This is my first Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a survivor. I have seen many support groups refer to this as ๐Breast Cancer ACTION Month๐ instead. I love that. โ โ ๐Get your mammograms.โ ๐Do your monthly checks. โ ๐If something doesn't feel or seem right, SAY something.โ ๐ALWAYS advocate for yourself. โ โ Thank You to everyone who reached out during the last ten months. You will never know what it meant to me to have such badasses cheering me on!โ โ Learn more about FUELhouseโs Breast Cancer Action campaign with our limited edition SWAG where all shirt proceeds go towards our (online store closes on the 21st) campaign for @barbellsforboobs in bio๐
